Science offers an important perspective into how the world around us operates. This year we will focus on chemistry and physics. Through research, discussions, laboratory activities, and problem solving, students will investigate and apply scientific methods of inquiry to physical science. Students should expand their knowledge of the principles and methods of the scientific process. In addition, they develop a greater understanding of the important role science plays in all aspects of our lives.
This year we have built a STEM room next to the science room in order to facilitate project-based learning. The new math teacher Ms. Dowson and I will be working together on projects with the whole eighth grade class.
The science course starts with chemistry; Physics and Astronomy are covered later in the year when students have had more experience with algebra to assist them in their calculations. Topics covered include:
Homework is given to augment work done in class. In addition to regular homework there will be longer assignments with specific due dates.
Assessment
Assessment is based on quizzes, topic tests, laboratory work, assignments, homework and class participation.
